High school is basically the same as all the grades you have been through before. Except now grades 9,10,11, and 12 are also called Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior.
Freshmen are sometimes called Fish or Froshmen. Try making friends with people in all grades, getting into some of the clubs, and accept that looks and clothing style will matter. How much effort you put into your appearance depends on if you want to be in the cool group, average group, or one of the other many groups. In close, avoid the phrase "be yourself" and think of it more like "don't be something you are not".

Be yourself and you will make good friends. Study hard since your grades are now counting towards college admission. Take the most challenging courses you can, and do well in them. Turn in your homework on time. Get involved with extra curricular activities, that's the stuff that makes high school great and memorable for years to come. Good luck!

Remember that you are still in school - so that work is your number one priority. Give yourself plenty of study time, and make sure that you get enough sleep. Show your teachers respect, even if the other kids make fun of you, they will secretly admire your cool, and you will be able to hold your head up high.
As far as friends, don't rule anyone out just because of the way they look. I had friends from every "clique" in school, and they were all great people.
Most of all, have fun. Ignore people who treat you poorly. Mean people do mean things because they want to make themselves look better. Try new things.

Be kind to everyone you meet. You never know when you'll need their vote for class president.
....but seriously, be who you are only better. Give everyone you meet a smile and a chance to show the kind of friend they can be...and stay away from "instant" friendship. True, lasting friendship takes time.
...be honest - it is much easier than trying to remember what lie you told to which person.
...study hard. Why can't you be valedictorian instead of that other person? I recently went to the graduation of girl who ended her high school career with a 5.0 and a full scholarship to Harvard [and other schools].

Keep up on your grades your freshman year! Try to not let stupid people in high school bother you. When you go to college, they don't matter anyways and you will probably never see them again. The high school drama is really stupid; just remember that you will look back at it in 4 years and realize just how STUPID it all was! Don't think you know it all, because you never will. Have fun!

Focus on good grades. I know grades might not mean anything to you right now, but by the time you graduate you will regret any C's (or lower) you got as a freshman and they will come to haunt you when you try to get into a good college.
As for friends/popularity, don't worry about it. Just be yourself and don't be afraid to talk to people. Its really just that easy and theres no secret to it.

Don't get crazy drunk at any party. You should always be in controlle of yourself, mind and body. Do not let any one talk you into things you know you will regret. And go to as many football games as you can, I don't like football, but I had some of the most fun at the games!
