Prison. In prison their not allowed to have belts. So if your pants were too big; Oh well.
They werent allowed belts because they might hurt the prison staff, other inmates or themselves.

So the fashion trend of our youth is to emulate people in prison, interesting concept.Gives us all something to strive for.Maybe a new trend from here in AZ,to wear the pink under ware ,from old Joe Arpios jails, and learn to enjoy the green bologna he served 2x a day .Maybe not ,there's not much style to that, maybe the black and white stripes the prison chain gangs that pick up our trash on the freeways.....hmmm ?
Sorry ,I'm just looking at new ways to influence
the next big blow up in the fashion industry and make a buck or two.

And to the person above that thinks only "ghetto " people wear the big baggy jeans, what world do you live in ,a lot of rich kids of all colors wear them, and if it was a so called ghetto kid in front of you that you made fun of ,Id bet money you said it out of his hearing so you wouldn't get your azz whooped.....

One day this little poor kid went to salvation army to get school clothes. The only size jeans they had were too big so he bought them anyway. He got to be really popular at school and other kids wanted to be like him so they bought saggy jeans like this kid. And so it started and spread nationwide.

I find alot of todays fashion is born from the "bad fashion" issues I had while i was a kid (cause i grew up poor)

Bell bottoms
High waters - Capris (sorry ladies...no symantics they are high waters)
Sagging pants
Holey or patched jeans
faded jeans
soiled jeans
frayed jeans

Levi Strauss
(1829-1902)
One of the best-known beneficiaries of California's gold rush economic boom, Levi Strauss was born in Bavaria and came to San Francisco in 1850, one of the thousands hoping to stike it rich. Trained as a tailor, he planned to manufacture tents and wagon covers for the Forty-niners, but finding no market for these items, he instead used the stout canvas he had brought with him to make especially durable pants, which miners found perfect for their close-to-the-ground line of work. He quickly began selling these "wonderful pants of Levi's" as fast as he could make them.

Strauss opened a factory at 98 Battery Street in San Francisco, began adding copper rivets at the stress points in his pants and switched from canvas to a heavy blue denim material called genes in France, which became "jeans" in America. Following his quick success in the clothing business, he branched out to serve as a director of an insurance company, a utility company, several banks, and in a variety of charitable organizations.

The company Levi Strauss founded remains one of the nation's leading apparel manufacturers, but even more impressively, the garment he created, still known as "levis," has long since left the diggings to become not only an emblem of the American West but an emissary of the Western lifestyle -- egalitarian, utilitarian, independent -- around the world. Levi Strauss died in San Francisco in 1902
