I think its time we put this expression to bed

It's such a catchy expression though... why would you want to get rid of it just because of a little loophole.

Mind you, I suppose you could say that starting a crack cocaine habit isn't going to make you much stronger either. Who said this originally anyway- was it Nietsche? Hmm... you're right, it could be time to drop it.... though it gives me such hope when bad things have happened, maybe I'll reel it off just a few more times.

It's a comfort phrase. Even if you have no limbs you are psychologically/spiritually stronger.
If it ever made anyone feel better we should keep it.
Of course , you can't be stronger if you're dead.

What if you end up like Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man?? Then you'll be really strong and wouldn't need limbs anyway...

Being an amputee shortens people's lifespans considerably, so the expression is still valid.

I don't think that it is interpreted as physical strength, but spiritual strength. I personally believe it considering all of the things that I have gone through in my life.

This is a metaphor concerning the ability to overcome obstacles, illness and heartache

It refers to illnesses. Your body builds up resistance to different illnesses hence you become stronger.
Sleeping with expressions isnt healthy however...
