Mine was that way too, for the longest time. She loved gay male comedians and her gay male friends, but she's threatened by queer women and is lesbophobic in many ways. It's a total double standard. But in other ways, she wanted me to be like her, too, and was very disappointed when I wasn't. (For instance, I had no interest in school clubs, preferring to start a rap/rock band and a 'zine or just hang out.) I've had to stay very strong in myself and constantly tell her that not everything is about her.

My mum loves gay man too but i know she'd be a bit, um, upset? (for want of a better word)maybe if my brother was gay or if i was. However the reality is that your mum is more than likely proud of you and happy for you as long as you are happy, these double standards are probably just because she had dreamed of
a big white wedding for her girl to a handsome man, who would live happily ever after and have lots of children in the 'normal' way. I'm sure if Dale Winton was her son she'd feel a bit 'let down', or maybe thats just cos he's so orange!!!!

Certainly is double standards. I suspect that it is because they are non-threatening to her (as a female!) Would be very interesting to see how she would react over having a gay son.
I also believe that lots of mums have the expectation that their daughters will produce grandchildren, so this may contribute to her reluctance to accept your sexuality.

Yes and no. Its a gender specific phenominon.
Mothers want their daughters to grow up to be just like them. They feel they failed as a mother if their daughter rejects the mother's sexuality.

This is not any different than with gay men and their dads.

Dale who? Brian who?

It is because if all gay men are camp and outrageous str8 people feel they can write them of as being somehow less than them. It is when gay people are the same as them that they get really scared.

it's a same gender thing. it could also be a "you cant be really having sex unless a penis is involved" thing.

Because you are her child - and she is worried about you - she doesn't want you to get hurt.

She had other expectations of what she wanted you to be.
