When every single poll conducted shows that the vast majority of Americans are moderates, why are we letting two small extremists groups split our nation apart? (Radical right and left)

The same reason we are letting the extremist groups control everything that happens world wide. It is the polar ends who go to war against each other and the centrists who pay the price. Moderates have the numbers but they have no voice. Utopia would be a place of balance, and most of the moderates could find a home there. Americans in the middle are portrayed to suffer from apathy and disinterest, while the lunatic fringes are thought to be the cutting edge. However how effective would the edges of the sword be without the steel shaft that represents the centrist culture? It is the same story over and over. The vast majority of people are content to just sit on the sidelines and watch as spectators. This is why the world is controlled by extremist factions.

A multi-party system would be the best solution for this problem!
Then compromise would have to reign.

The way it is now, swing-voting moderates make the mistake of voting for one party or the other, which swings the country back and forth between people who believe in good government (the Democrats) and those who DON'T believe in good government and prove it every time (the Republicans). So, Dems win, fix the government, then Repubs win and wreck it - forcing the Dems to start all over. Unfortunately, every time the Repubs get in office they make things worse until, like today, the damage they've done is so terrible no fix seems possible.

Without a multi-party fix, the only thing that will save our nation is for the swing voters to remember that good government will always been needed more than bad government (take Katrina, the corporate fiascos of Enron & Worldcom & the lies that led to 2600+ American deaths and trillions in U.S. treasure wasted on a country far removed from these United States, for example).

I think it is easier to choose a side and just rant. I do think most people are centrists. Some of the answers here are very good and people have done the research to back up their answers. I do think most Americans are to busy working and living because life in the new millennium thus far seems like a blur. The amount of information we deal with day to day is being processed at incredible speeds. It is almost impossible to avoid being hit by the constant onslaught of information both useless and useful. Most families and friends want to spend time together and rightly so. Therein lies the problem. More often then not we only have time to read or listen to parts of an issue because there are only so many hours in each day.

Our president is actually a "divider" in a "uniters" clothing. Just five years ago next month the nation stood more united than ever before in history -- with nearly every other country at our side. Now the only agreement is that we are despised abroad and divided within.

I think we should have another American Revolution. Let's call it the Middle Class party. This party would make sure that we do stupid things like, only spend taxes on things that would benefit the MAJORITY of the population (roads, schools, protection, basic healthcare, etc.) Without the pork, our taxes would be lower and services would be distributed evenly.

we have three groups in america with complete and oppisite views on things .
ONE is a group who believes in a persons right to choice on a variety of issues another is for strict laws to control the choices and the last is a group that is lead by a guy name god with a complete set of rules and partial acceptance to both groups .
So we are completely divided and have no common ground .one group says the rich take to much leaving america poor the other says you have every opertunity to succeed and the third that by not following gods laws you will suffer .

Because they want us to believe that we will be throwing our votes away if we don't vote for them.

It is a fact MOST Americans vote against the other candidate. Both parties are tring to make the other look bad and "scare" us into voting for them. Since they can not "BUY" our vote with tax breaks and governemnt handouts they have to use FEAR instead. (DNC Global warming)(GOP terrorists).
It is all a power play

Because we have extremists in power...we are more divided now, then when Clinton was in power, and Clinton had a republican house to deal with! Also, the majority are not being represented by this administration, and for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction...
