Don't worry about magnets, anthony e. They will NOT remove data from CDs or DVDs.

Long term storage is an 'unknown quantity', though. CDs and DVDs haven't been around for a comparatively long time yet. I remember watching a TV program (in the UK) called Tomorrow's World where we were told that you could smear jam (preserve) on them and they'd still play. I wouldn't advise doing this!

If you need to preserve stuff for lengthy periods of time, you'd be well advised to write to CDRs, and better still, branded ones as they are more likely to last longer.

A USB secret is sweet for about 10,000 write cycles (some human beings will declare 100,000, even with the undeniable fact that this is my documents, so i favor to be conservative), yet thousands and thousands of examine cycles. when you're talking about purely conserving it on a shelf, the in ordinary words situation is degradation via cosmic rays, and at present the chips are fairly properly shielded from that, so the advice could be fantastic for decades. i'd worry so a lot extra about dropping or negative it.

they cant deteriote as such but they can become very brittle, if you get a deep scratch then the data is lost permently if you have loads of minor scratchs, then the cd cant be read because light (laser) cant bounce of the surface like it should.
but the cd can be fully restored as long as the data layer isnt damaged. and to all the peeps in the world always look after your cds.

They take 100 years to detoriate so will most likely outlive you. The main danger is dirt and scratches but even these arent fatal if taking to a specialist who can extract the data digitally and put it onto a new disk

Yes, they will deteriorate over time regardless of what you do, but less slowly if you look after them
