I am attempting to put in a printer, but the company will not let me use the "Local printer attached to this computer" option, but they did give me the IP to the printer I am supposed to use, kinda backwards if you ask me, but I think I can get it to work without going through the nightmare of our tech support if I can figure out the URL to the IP they gave me. I know about ping and tracert, is there a way to reverse that and instead of putting in the URL to get the IP, you can put in the IP and get the URL?

Thx for any help,

John B.

Unfortunately the printer most likely won't have a URL unless it's one of those super dooper scanner/copier/fax type of printers.

what you might be able to do is create a an entry in your hosts file to point to it and then add it as a network device. I've never tried that though so don't know if it would work but it may be worth a try if you can't add a local port for the direct IP printer.

Local host file is located :-
%systemroot% (probably c:\windows)
system32
drivers
etc
edit the file called hosts (with no .xxx at the end)
follow an example in the file i.e. :-
192.168.1.10printer

You can try using this format for the URL:

http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where the X's are the numbers of the IP address. If you are on the same intranet, that should work nicely.
