If you're a Boston Red Sox fan, you must be saying to yourself, "there's always time to come back. We weren't at our best, and we can make up the ground we need down the stretch to make the playoffs."
If you aren't, you're saying to yourself, "the Red Sox are FINISHED."
With quick injuries to Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield, arguably 250 RBIs and 50-60 home runs out of the Yankees' line-up, the Red Sox took the fast advantage of the strong A.L. East Division (including the Toronto Blue Jays at the time). However, even through mid-June, the Red Sox couldn't build a lead of 5 games or greater (that I can remember). Now that New York has Dotel back, Matsui and Sheffield rehabbing, the additions of Cory Lidle and Bobby Abreu, it's become clear not only who the better team is, but which organization has the drive to win here and now.
With the recent five-game SWEEP, the Yankees take a commanding 6.5 game lead over the collapsing Red Sox, 7 in the all-important loss column. I guarantee you that there isn't a team in the majors that can withstand a blow like that and come back to win the division.
Better luck next year Boston.

I dont think we can win the division the yanks are to strong to make up 7 games in the loss column however the twins will fade w/o liriano and the white sox arnt that good. Besides if one other person had hit besides manny in the yankees series we wuld have one two or maybe three of the games the guy was 8 for 11 with two homers the even more amazing thing is hew was walked 9 times because no one else culd hit so the yankees walked him every time he came up and it meant something. We will make a comebak dont worry wen tek gets bak the pitching will automaticaslly get better and god knows that beckett can only improve on that last start plyus schilling and wells looked as good as they ever have in that series hey dont dwell on five games u play 162 so five dont make or break a season no matter who there against. The sox are gunna gop into the stadium and take 4 of the games back in september anyway then everyone will forget bout this series. GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a Yankee fan who thinks the Sox are done, but there is a possibility of them winning. The only thing the Sox can do is stay competitive and hope that the Yanks lose. After all, this isn't the Sox's division to win; it's the Yankees' to lose. Realistically, however, the Sox have little chance of catching up, especially without Varitek.

In order to catch the Yanks, they need Schilling, Ortiz, Ramirez, and possibly Varitek healthy and playing at full strength. A little luck wouldn't hurt, either. I'm not sure they can catch the Yanks, but I believe they will catch the White Sox and get the Wild Card.

I'm a Yankee fan, but I don't believe the Red Sox are out of it yet. The Bosox are a good team capable of winning 12 games in a row to contend for the top spot. The Bosox also need to pay attention to just making the playoffs as a wild card. Hot race there.

They need some help from other teams in the division. They are going to have to do a little scoreboard watching and hope they are withen range for the four game series at Yankee stadium in September. Win that series. They have got to get there pitching to be a bit better especially Beckett. They can not make the David Wells trade to the NY Mets as is being rumored. Wow. while I write this it does not look to good.

They're done. You don't have to take on Abreu type salaries, but at least make some kind of trade to help the team. I can't believe that the Red Sox are pulling this "save prospects for 2008" instead of trading for players. By then, Ramirez will be past his prime, and Schilling will be retired. They have a team that can do damage in the playoffs this year, but they won't take a risk. You have to go for it when you have a team with their potential.

purple Sox will win, of direction the Yankees beat the devil Rays, they are having a very undesirable 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. they'd probable play them lower back and the devil Rays would take a million or 3 from the Yanks.

I love my BoSox but as any Sox fan knows-- ITS OVER. The Sox need a miracle to take the division and they cashed in that coupon in '04.
