I started trying with all of mine (4) at that age and only one was able to eat. The others didn't loose the reflex to spit it back out until closer to 6 months. Try watching for signals from the baby that they are ready such as great interest and smacking lips while you are eating. Also, you shouldn't start until they double birth weight. When you do start, if they don't seem to swallow any but spit it all out instead, you should try waiting a few days, then try again. Do this until they are able to eat efficiently. Start with rice cereal, wait a few day then try introducing a vegetable, wait a few days then try a fruit. This way you can monitor for any allergies. I say veggies before fruit because I've heard it said that if the baby eats sweets first they may be less likely to eat veggies later. That's the way I did all my kids and they all eat veggies now.

It depends on the child & what their personal needs are, every child is different. I started my oldest daughter on baby food at 2 months because she was drinking a full 9 oz. bottle with cereal in it & when she was finished she would cry like she hadn't eaten anything at all. My ped & I argued over this & I got a new ped because of it. My son started on baby food at about 4 months which is when most docs recommend it. My youngest 2 girls both have eczema, really sensitive skin, allergies, & one of them had bronchialitis at 6 weeks (which could have been an early sign of asthma, thank goodness it wasn't). So, with these sensitivities so early they had a much higher chance of developing food allergies if introduced to baby food too soon. So they didn't start it until around 6 months. Do what you feel is right & what you feel your baby needs. Good luck.

The old recommendation used to be 4 months, but the AAP now says that it's better to wait until 6 months. Formula or breastmilk should be the main source of nutrition for the entire first year, while solids are for fun, practice, and experience with a variety of tastes and textures.
That being said, I started my older daughter on solids shortly after 4 months at the advice of my pediatrician. She was still nursing about 8 times per day as well. (I was hoping that solids would help her sleep better at night, but no such luck.) I only offered one meal of solids per day until she was about 8 months old. I didn't add a third meal until she was about 10 months old. She's now 3 years old and a very good eater.
I offered my younger daughter solids at about 5 months, but she rarely took more than a few bites at a time. In fact, she wasn't that interested in solids until she was almost a year old. She's now 21 months old, still nurses 4-8 times per day, and eats very well.
If you have any family history of allergies (food or otherwise), you may want to wait until 6 months or older in order to help minimize the risk. Also, if you wait until your baby is 6 months old, he or she will be able to eat table food more easily, and you won't waste money buying jars of baby food.
If you do decide to start solids, you may want to try rice cereal, oatmeal, bananas, or sweet potato. Just follow your baby's lead, and remember that this should be a fun learning experience for both of you.
Good luck!

I started my daughter at 3 1/2 mo.s. She was consuming a lot of formula daily, so I thought, let's try. First cereal, then fruits for a mo. Now at 4 1/2 mos. I've started some yellow (orange) veggies. She loves the baby food.

relies upon on the baby and the era (LOL!) modern-day concept is 6 months yet docs a era in the past reported 6 weeks... i in my opinion glided by ability of my youngster's cues. They have been all huge toddlers and way forward on progression curve (have been sitting unaided at 3 months and walking in the previous 8 months). So while they have been observing us consume and all...i began only the cereal. i think of it grow to be between 9 and 12 weeks counting on each and each new child. I waiting till between 3-4 months to start any culmination/greens. we have not got any foodstuff hypersensitive reactions and that they've been breastfed toddlers.

My little one just turned 14 weeks old and he eats gerber level 1 baby food. It's pureed so it's almost liquid and he handles it well. I started giving him cereal in his bottle at 6 weeks. he eyes my food now and grabs ( or swings his fist ) at my spoons and forks. 4 months is the recommended time n all the baby books, but it's really all about when your baby tells you they are ready. Just introduce food slowly, like give pureed peaches and then wait until baby has a bowel movement to see if it is runny or has mucus in it. And look at the skin for hive breakout to let you know if there is an allergic reaction. Other than that, it should be fine.

Careful, you'll get your head bit off for asking that question by the 'not before the 6th month' police!
Depending on which baby, sometimes started a small amount of infant cereal (tsp or so mixed with breastmilk), just before bedtime, at about 4 months.
See what your ped's opinion is, but take it only as an opinion.
Do what you feel comfortable with, but remember your baby's stomach is small. Stick with one food (baby cereal, plain rice or oatmeal- avoid wheat)
