I am taking some steps right now to try and increase my milk flow, but I was wondering how long I needed to continue those things (pumping after each feeding, eating more protein, taking supplements) once my milk production is up. Any ideas?

Oatmeal. Lots of oatmeal. If you can't stand the breakfast oatmeal, you can make oatmeal cookies.

The link below is from a great breastfeeding site.

I am wondering if the baby is latching?

The best way to keep your milk production up is to nurse the baby and to nurse frequently or as often as the baby is hungry. The more you breastfeed the more milk you will produce.

If the baby is not latching you need to get some assistance from la leche league, WIC or a lactation consultant to help the baby latch correctly. In that situation definately keep pumping. It will help your supply until you can get the baby to nurse from the breast.

Eating to hunger and drinking to thirst is also very important. If you do not drink enough fluids it can make your milk supply go down.

I hope this helps and keep up the good work.

The best you can do is to continue putting your baby on the breast as much as you possibly can. Your baby is the best at increasing your milk supply and getting the most milk possible. Why do you think you need to increase your milk supply? Are you one of those mothers who say that they can't pump and their baby is 2 wks old and under? (which is a very common question). If you nurse your baby on demand you should have enough milk. If you can give us some more information we can advise you properly. I don't want anyone to think that people just don't have enough milk (as so many dorks in here seem to think). I want them to know that milk supply is something you have to make and it doesn't magically appear.

I would continue "those things" as long as until my baby wean. Let's just keep on frequent pumping, eating more, drinking more fluid, taking supplements to keep up the breastmilk production. IF you pump more than your baby needed, you can always freeze them for later (around 6-9months your baby's need may go up to 40 ounce per day!) It's always a good idea to store up extra. Keep it up! =)

Increase your fluid intake the more you drink helps as well. Yes pumping will help as well as long as you are keeping up with a regular sheduale of feeding your baby your milk will stay sustained for as long as it needs to be

Once your production is up, if you are taking herbal supplements, I would suggest slowly backing off of them a little bit at a time and watching for any changes in supply as you do so.

Drink lots and lots and lots of fluids also. Once you get your supply up, keep up with the extra pumping.
