When I rate the greatest players ever, I determine how high they will be by how their records stack up. And record wise there is no one better than Jerry Rice. His records are unreachable by any player that will ever play the game. It's amazing how he did so many things. But I also have a sleeper pick. Marshall Faulk. No one influenced the game as much as he did. When you hear of who Reggie Bush and LaDainian Tomlinson are compared to, you don't hear Walter Payton or Jim Brown. You hear Barry Sanders and Marshall Faulk. The more exciting a player is to watch, the better he is. So there are my three, Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders, and Marshall Faulk. But hey, it's just my opinion.

Justiceman, I'm not sure which rock you've been hiding under (Was it the one by my shed?) but Peyton Manning has most of Dan Marinos old records, including the import ones (TD Passes throw in a single season.)
My picks for greatest ever would be:
Walter Payton
Jim Brown
Joe Montana
Jerry Rice
Peyton Manning
Marvin Harrison
in the future, I'd say Reggie Bush definately has a shot.

Jim Brown - his numbers in 9 seasons say it all. And keep in mind, that he was the only weapon Cleveland had. The defense knew he was getting the ball and still couldn't stop him.
Jerry Rice is the greatest WR of all time and was truly amazing, but Brown gets my vote.

Barry Sanders. The man was graceful powerful and down right amazing to watch. He would have easily broken Paytons record if would have stayed. Gaining all of those yards with no offensive line to speak of. He would turn a five yard loss into a three yard gain. Making it look easy. The man was gold.

Jim Brown was the ******* man, son. 9 years and 12000 plus yards... he could have been the rushing champ if he continued for 5 more years.
And mind you this was when there were like 14 games in a season if i remember correctly.

Walter Payton! No examination of reams of statistics or records, just a nice, decent, quality football player who performed magic whenever he touched the ball.
