I Think They Shud Ban It From Every Cartoon And Im Glad They Are Because When Children See The Characters Smoking They Think Its Cool And Its Like Advertising To The Younger Which We Dont Want! 'Its Like Sending Them A Packet Of Cigarretes And Saying Light Up' < Robin Williams Saying Of Mrs Doubtfire Hehehe xxxxxxxxxxxx

You know, Tom & Jerry are my favourite cartoon characters - I grew up with them and I still watch them if they come up on the TV. I would like to emphasise that I DO NOT SMOKE!!! Children learn by example and are also subject to peer pressure. I think if a parent is a smoker or if a child is not educated to know the hazards of smoking, then they will experiment with cigarettes, or worse, and may end up getting addicted.
Education is the key here, not banning cartoons! You may as well ban all smokers in the process. Make it completely illegal, for crying out loud.
Why don't they ban all cartoons who feature (human) characters that can fly, too?? Maybe some kid will think they are capable of flying and jump out the window of a tall building pretending to be superman or batman!?

Yes. I am passionately against smoking in real life, but this is stupid. It has been established that Kids can distinguish between Tom and Jerry violence and real life, so the argument that it promotes smoking falls flat, especially as most of the smoking characters are negatively portrayed, it would have to be argued that if they have any influence, it has to be an anti-smoking influence,
Besides, the cartoons are of their time. They should stand alone - you should not censor an historic archive.

Oh, hark at me, getting all academic! Point is .. THEY ARE FREAKIN CARTOONS! Lighten up, guys!!!

I don't think smoking in cartoons is bad. Its normally the baddie that smokes and he'll probably get blown up anyway later on.
I think the only reason they ban it is because it influences children to smoke. but if i was a young child and saw a baddie smoke, i wouldn't start smoking id just think everyone else that smoked was evil.

I don't think I have a problem with them banning smoking in programing meant for young children. Any show targeted to a child whose years are in the double digits though, that's going too far.

The politically correct brigade have been going too far for too long - children aren't influenced by cartoon characters and need to be given more credit.

I miss the cartoons of the late 80's, early 90's...

It's insane what they want to ban from TV nowadays.

I guess you can explain away the violence by saying it's pretend, but not smoking! I think they should shut down the cigarette companies! Who else gets to sell an addictive substance, besides medicine?
