Gwar, Enthroned, Morbid Angel, Satyricon, Nargaroth, Mayhem, Leviathan , Emperor, Dark Throne, Behemoth. They're like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth. If that's not heavy, I don't know what is.
Some others too are Otep, Opeth, Obituary, Suffocation, Stormtroopers of Death, Iced Earth, Carnivore.

GURD !
My ex-,ilitary "soul" brother Taipan The Outlaw, who is into metal alot more than me, would easily say that Gurd is the best hard-n-heavy metal band in the world right now.
Since they aren't commercially known, I guess that makes them pretty "independant" yet they have a very good catalogue of products, as well as a very good DVD available.

Well, I'm more of an old punk rock guy really, but how about Sick Of It All. Great band, definitely metal, with slight rock and punk influences.
