Why is it that a mixed breed dog, say a Chihuahua and Dachsund are being sold for hundred of dollars? Mutts are just that mutts! Not papered and should not be selling for those kinds of prices. I want a Bicho Frise/Yorkie mix and can't find one cheap.

It's just a phase. It's one of those "be the first on your block to have a _____ (fill in the blank)" There are always people who want to be different and who'll buy into a fad. Personally, I LOVE mutts, be they from a rescue organization or a pricey breeder. They usually have the best qualities of whatever breeds are in them!!

Sounds like you are more frustrated than questioning the value of a mutt/mongeral/mixed breed. The preference of a mixed breed over a pure breed is that the former generally lives longer than the latter and has less health problems. Another benefit is being able to try for the size of one dog and the temperment of another. Also, considering the thousands of dollars that can be paid for a pure breed, a few hundered dollars isn't that much to pay for a dog.

Because a lot of breeds recognized today are actually a mixture of other breeds years ago. Watch a dog show (usually Sat. am), it can be quite an education as to the origin of many modern breeds

It's because they throw on some cutsy fake name and pretend it's a breed. If you want a good mix breed dog (or even a purebred for that matter!) the first place you should search is rescues and shelters.

The law of supply and demand. Designer dog mixes are all the rage with movie stars and the wealthy, so breeders can get away with charging more. You gotta love free-market america.

So I guess that means your gonna have to pay the fortune too. Supply and demand. Unfortunately most don't realize how many end up in shelters and rescues.

i dunno, but i think alot of money could be made crossing lhasa apso with shih tzu, bulldog with shih tzu, etc. think of the possibilities!! really it is the stupid people who are willing to pay all that money for them that is causing this stupidity to continue.
