It means that it is produced by chemical synthesis, especially those not of natural origin, so it is artificial oil kinda and has long life!

Synthetic motor oils are fuel efficient, extended life lubricants manufactured from select base stocks and special purpose additives. Synthetic oil base stocks are made from organic compounds or synthetic hydrocarbons using a process that re-arranges the structure so all the molecules are uniform in size, shape and weight, a phenomenon that does not occur in nature. In contrast to petroleum oils which are pumped from the earth and refined, synthetics are custom-designed to produce, in effect, the ideal lubricant.

BTW....By using synthetic oils you help reduce dependency on foreign oil.

Is regular motor oil natural or synthetic? Why is synthetic oil different from regular motor oil? It is because the price is artificially multiplied times 4.

it comes from the fruit of the " synthoid" tree. These rare trees were once found all over the globe, but thanks to the Bush family...only a few remain. The synthetic oil produced from these trees could have helped us slow down on burning fossil fuels which could help in the fight against air pollution. The Bush family said they had a better idea. They said that if we would give them every oil well on the face of this planet , they'd talk. Then they said we would have to give them any oil we may find on another planet to get the information. When asked ,"Why must you have control of all the oil in the solar system"? The elder Bush said,"It's because we want to be rich enough to buy the USA and the constitution and the Bill of Rights and"......then,his younger son interrupted. "But daddy",the son went on."ain't we aw-ready got 'em thangs"?At that , the elder Bush smacked his wife and said,"woman,I told you to abort but you said he'd be somebody important ?????"

Synthetic oil is oil consisting of chemical compounds which were not originally present in crude oil (petroleum) but were artificially made (synthesized) from other compounds. Synthetic oil could be made to be a substitute for petroleum or specially made to be a substitute for a lubricant oil such as conventional (or mineral) motor oil refined from petroleum. When a synthetic oil is made as a substitute for petroleum, it is generally produced because of a shortage of petroleum or because petroleum is too expensive. When synthetic oil is made as a substitute for lubricant refined from petroleum, it is generally because of superior properties of the synthetic oil. Synthetic motor oil is often synthesized from reactants (feedstocks) derived from petroleum, but the compounds in the synthetic motor oil have different molecular structures from those originally in petroleum.

The crude oil that synthetic oils are derived from includes hydrogen and carbon atoms, or hydrocarbons and different organic and organic compounds. more desirable organic and organic compounds are further in the introduction of guy-made oil; those compounds are manipulated to furnish the perfect proportions and molecule length for more desirable helpful engine performance and protection.

check out the web sites for AMSOIL and Royal Purple. They never tell what the synthetics are made of. Or try: exactly.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil
this tells a bit more about the synthetics.

synthetic oils are made by mixing alcohol various acids other chemicals and hydrocarbons together.Hydrocarbons can come from wood coal natural gas.By combining specific molecules together that's how its made.
