I want to get something special for a male-friend. Neither he nor I has a whole lot of money, but maybe I can find something cool out there for a couple hundred?

I'm a huge racing fan too.
Some things I've asked for lately are mock-brakes coasters, and model cars (the kind you build yourself, not the pre-made ones), or maybe even a gas-powered remote controlled car.

Here's a good site near where I live for ideas:

Most cities should have similar stores - look for auto racing, clothing or hobby stores. In worst case, there's bound to be an indoor go kart track you could take him to ;)

Try the "RACING EXPERIANCE".The company is based out of Kansas but runs 2 day packages at several tracks accross the country.I got to drive Talladega last November.
This driving package was around $500.00 to drive 6 laps ( my speed was around 165-170 ).There are up to 5 other cars out on the track at the same time, you draft, pass and go flat out.The cars use are all former cup cars.
There is a 6 lap ride along that is available for around $125 that you ride with the instructor doing the driving.
this is something that is super as a gift for the ultimate race fan.

For a couple of hundreds of $ you can find a beautiful selection of cars at Radio Shack. They have an awesome selection of remote control cars of all kinds, trucks, SUV, race cars, etc. You can even get him some accessories that come along with it for not much more. And believe me the whole thing can cost you less then a $100.00
Or you can get him a Richard Petty Driving experience if you live near the cities it's offered at. It's $149.99 plus tax, it's the best experience i have ever had (or nearly that!) But it was awesome.
Check it out: http://www.1800bepetty.com/
Good luck :)

Be sure to find out exactly what kind of racing he likes (ie nascar vs formula 1) and what teams/drivers he likes. Then get him some used equipment from one of those teams. I have encourgaed my wife to do that but she hasn't followed through.

Also, one of the racing schools or experiences would be a once in a lifetime awesome experience for him.

If you also enjoy racing then find something that you can do together.

depends on if he likes a particular racer or just racing in general. some times there are special race tickets available for nascar that have meet and greet with the drivers.or an autograph piece of memorabilia from a driver

How about a race car?

Just follow the story of the grasshopper and the octopus:

The grasshopper spent all summer collecting nuts and berries for the winter, while the octopus spent his time goofing off and playing video games. But when winter came round, the grasshopper died and the octopus ate all his nuts and berries. And he got a race car.

How about a racing package. You can purchase days at race tracks with certified race trainers. A couple hundred should cover it.

I say take him to a race. What kind of racing is he into? Circle track, drag, etc. There are many different types so I would take him to the kind of racing he loves. You can buy him food and stuff.

maybe more than you have to spend but check into a ride around the track at one of the races. if not fine a car of his favorite drive and get collector's item.
