right click empty spot on desktop, goto properties, then click the screen saver tab, at the bottom click the power button, then the advance tab.
There should be an option that says When I close the lid do the following. Change that to "Do Nothing". Save everything, and you should be OK.

Look it up on the website for the manufacturer. Most cases, there is a special function key that is used to toggle which screen is used. (On most there is a blue Function key that you hit with the 5 or 6 key, that has a little monitor icon on the key as well in blue.) So search your keyboard. Usually the toggle is Attached Screen/Mirrored/External Screen in that order. Press the key combination till you get what you want.
Some model Dell laptops will not allow you to close the laptop unless you disable the Hibernate on close function, check your control panels. Others want to be docked when they are closed. Might have to experiment, and you may end up leaving the screen ajar a bit to keep the machine running.

Go to control panel and select power options. there is a radio button selection which tells the laptop what to do when the lid is shut.
You may also be able to select this option by pressing F2 when the laptop boots up.

Adjust your power settings ('start' --> 'control pannel') so the laptop does not turn off when you close it. Be cautious of working long and with it closed because many laptops breathe through their keyboard. If you can leave you monito cracked open, that may help some.

It relies upon on your pics setup besides the shown fact that it could artwork to easily plug the visual show unit into your laptop's VGA port in the previous you turn it on and then open the laptop quickly to coach it on. then you certainly could see the startup technique on the exterior visual show unit. If that would not artwork then you certainly'll would desire to bypass into show properties and alter the settings to make the exterior visual show unit the time-honored visual show unit. you additionally can turn off hibernate and standby in show properties. (suited click on computing device, opt for properties) i in my opinion like the docking station recommendations you may get for a Dell laptop. It makes the approach 100X much less difficult. you only dock your laptop, the show comes up on the exterior visual show unit and once you prefer to take your laptop someplace, undock and the settings bypass returned.
