What the hell is the world coming to....? I have just been watching the news and one of the top stories is about cartoon characters smoking...? It doesn't matter about the fact that the characters hit themselves and others over the head with saucepans and show anvils falling on heads - it doesn't mean that kids will do the same for gods sake !!!

What does everyone else think about this political correctness gone berserk???

This is straightforward censorship. In Orwell's 1984 the powers in control went back through the archives and edited out anything that contradicted or undermined the 'Big Brother' state.

I have read that to censor these cartoons will involve altering the original cartoons by hand drawing every individual frame to eliminate the (legal) tobacco products.

Will we be looking at Disney films and eradicating racial stereotypes from history next? Perhaps it's merited, but I would not condone it.

What will be edited out of history next?

Here we go, into the abyss of rewriting the past. History is NEVER to be forgotten (and art is essentially history -or a reflection of it - written not by the victors, but by the people of the time, and I would class animation as art.)

When we start obliterating and censoring existing art, where do we stop? Will we be cutting chapters out of books next? Dickens? Shakespeare? Orwell? It's a slippery slope I find unacceptable.

There should be noisy, serious public outrage.

I've never Spanked a dog on its **** (Foghorn Leghorn) - I've never encouraged a coyote to fall off a cliff (Beep Beep) - I've never gone hunting for Wabbits, nor have I dropped a 1 tonne block on someones head and believed they would come out of it alive.

The world has gone wrong, where did it start to get this bad. It may only be a small thing, 'smoking in a cartoon', but really, it is the thin end of the wedge. I was bought up on these cartoons, and have never been influenced one way or the other. I am a non - smoker, my father smoked, and surely that would have been influence enough to smoke. But like spanking dogs arses and giving an opponent a stick of dynamite disguised as a cigar, i have resisted that temptation.

Is it more to the fact that some people now wish to take no responsibility for their children's upbringing, or a lack of will on their part? That they have to find a lazy way out of their responsibilities by laying the blame in what is essentially, escapist entertainment.

My mate Chalky from down the pub smokes 100 coffin nails a day and blames it all on Tom and Jerry - says that one look of Tom rolling his own and entering flavour country was all it took. He's also got a phobia for bulldogs and is forever walking into planks/garden rakes/getting pianos dropped on him from a great height, so I for one am glad the authorities are using their time wisely and clamping down on this serious threat to public health. Hmmm, I wonder what the favourite programme of the people making this judgement was when they were growing up.
Mickey mouse, perhaps? Arf Arf!

i LOVED tom and jerry as a kid (still do) and I don't think I have turned out that bad!
it's crazy, parents are trying to find things to blame rather than themselves.... though it isn't always parent's fault kids go off the rails.....

yes children do get influenced by TV but to worry about them smoking and not worry about the cartoon violence is mad, cartoons are cartoons and most kids accept it isn't real, but if it were real people then maybe there would be an issue

i know I'm not and won't be stopping my daughter from watching so called violent or smoker friendly cartoons

The Flintstones used to be an adult cartoon.
They even advertised smoking I believe it was Winston or Salem cigarettes.
That was the norm back then.. I think it's stupid to start going on that's not right cover little Johnny's eye's don't let them see that!...

And as to characters hitting and getting up and running like nothing happened.. I think kids back in the day knew if you hit someone like that you did not just get up and shake it off...If you did try it you got your hide tanned.

Now days .....Well I don't know some kids I think have been so desensitized to violence...it's sad some seem to think nothing of and think it funny if they harm someone.

My opinion :

We need to cover there ears more than their eyes.
And go back to kids playing and being kids.

It's stupid it's only a cartoon, But I do have to admit that some cartoons are more violent than some of the 18 films so whats going on there.

I asked a similar question earlier, you are right, it is totally ridiculous, when will it stop? They will be telling kids to close their eyes in the bath next, just incase the have sexual hang ups later in life. Long live tom and jerry, i grew up with them and i am reasonably level headed

I agree A Cartoon is just that, entertainment. Nothing more. I watched cartoons as a young man and if I chose to do the things I saw then it hurt and I didnt do them anymore. What a bunch of whiners.
