Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the place where over 13 million people live, making it one of the most populous cities in the world but also, a big city to visit, find out more with hotelbye . Most of the city was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and then again by the bombing in the WWII, however, Tokyo was able to achieve a remarkably rapid recovery both times. The main attraction of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace with its beautiful 17th-century parks surrounded by walls and moats. The palace is still in use by the Imperial family.

God people here make me mad,
I live on a bit less then $1000.00 Usd a week. It is only me and my wife. I assume a family of 3 meens you, wife, and child. $60,000 a year would be more then I make. I do, however live in the suburbs of Osaka, not the city. We have plenty of money for rent, food and, entertainment Of course a child will take your entertainment money but kids give thier worth in entertainment. Japan is not as expensive as people make it out to be. If you are a smart consumer you can Survive on $60,000 a year. For example if you go to the Supermarkets late (Near closing) many items are discounted. Also everyday area stores run "Specials" for example just today I got a Dozen Eggs for 79 yen (Roughly .65 cents American) come over and go for it you'll figure it all out. The average English teacher (at an Eikawa)(Nova,ECC,Geos) makes about $2500.00 a month and they survive and party and save. Listed below is an example of a job listing for english teachers. 60 grand you'll be fine

It really depends on where you are going to live, if you are going to live in the heart of tokyo, that probably wouldn't even cover the rent. However, if you live in one of the suburbs, or even outside tokyo in one of the much less expensive places, you would do quite well on that money, but your daily commute would be longer, if you can put up with that, you will do well.
Some books that might help:

To make ends meet, your wife could potentially teach english as a side job as well.
However, If you are making 60k a year, don't even consider home ownership, house prices in Japan are extremely inflated.
To get some good ideas on apartment prices, check out:

Or do your best with your Google-fu, I would suggest looking for at minimum a 2ldk or 3ldk (3ldk would give you an extra room) Be aware that apartments in and around tokyo are tiny by international standards as well.

Very expensive but you maybe able to live poorly there. Your question isn't very specific. 60,000USD in savings or for yearly salary? A custodian overthere can also make that much in a yearly salary already but he has to pay for a lot of expensive stubs so his take home probably not that much.

Will you send your child to an international school? If yes, then 60,000 USD will be difficult to cover your daily expenses plus the cost of school, and the yearly national tax and localin habitants tax.
My company supplements my salary for my 4 year old's 幼稚園 & international preschool and plays 80% of my 1st grader's costs to attend Tokyo's American School in Japan (ASIJ).
In regards to the international schools, if your child does not have English skills that meet the school's criteria they will not allow your child to enter the school. Regardless of age, nationality and native language.
Attending local Japanese schools is possible, but I am not sure if the educational programs can fulfill your needs to educate your child.

Uh for a family of 3? In Tokyo? Maybe you could do it, but probably not very comfortably. You should look at places outside of Tokyo, but not too far. Like Saitama, still a big place, just not a huge city. Not too far from Tokyo and a lot more affordable ^_^

The average family income in Japan is 7,000,000 yen ( = 61,000 USD ). But it doesn't reflect the real.
We have to check the range of income that includes the most number of families, which is called "mode" in statistics.
That's 4,000,000 - 4,500,000 yen ( = 35,000 - 39,000 USD ).
I'd say your salary is good enough compared to an ordinary salary of Japanese. But in Tokyo it costs much to live.

It depends where in Japan. Cities are expensive but you could probably do alright outside of the large metropolitan centers.
