"A lot of Filipinos are hypocrites. Facing gays, they can come off as friends. But, behind their backs, it's a different story. I know a lot of straight guys who hate gays. They just don't want to be seen as narrow minded especially in the face of gays who do well in their professions or careers. "
Quoted from a filipino, agreed upon by me, a filipino.
"Then some would call me racist for my thoughts, or say that I'm attacking my own heritage and other junk. Too much pride in their heritage. Just too much it's so stupid."
Yeah, yeah. It's in the travel section. So sue me.

Maybe, because the Philippines is still more on the conservative side, that is why any deviation from the normal will raise eyebrows.
But in my experience, guys hate gays who are vulgar, loud and flirty. Otherwise it's OK.

Yes. There are some open-minded Filipinos but definitely homophobia is strong here. Even if you don't show it, they hate you. Not all Filipinos are homophobics but definitely there are.

I'm the only straight guy in my office. My boss is gay. So, while I kinda understand what you mean, at least be glad that what homophobia there is in the Philippines isn't usually violent.
Also, when was the last time you heard of a gay guy or girl being kicked out of the house by their parents? Even if the parents would rather not have their kid be gay, at least they're trying to come to terms with it, right?
I dunno. Just can't see where all your bitterness is coming from.
Be loud. Be proud ika nga....

Not all, but I bet that every Filipino knew a person or more who is homophobic. Well, for me, you can't really blame them all.
Most gay men in the Philippines aren't the "discreet" or "decent" type, you know... most of them are loud, vulgar, cross dressers who give attractive looking straight men dirty looks when they happen to pass by.
I myself had an unfortunate rendezvous with an indiscreet gay folk.
Although most gay men whom I am friends with are really decent, good and dependable people, whose artistic flair for basically everything and infectious zest for life is admirable.

We respect gays generally, some use humor to diffuse social pretensions & intolerance. It all still boil downs to social graces, personal prejudices and moral values bec whether hetero or homo, what motivates sincerely a person to do what he does is in his heart.

I've had 2 gay Philippino students who were totally afraid of coming out because they were petrified their parents would disown them. One nearly succeeded at committing suicide. So I think it must be.
