The knock numbers or anti-knock numbers to be more precise, designate reduction in tendency of premature combustion prior to full compression. In earlier days a compound called tetra ethyl lead used to be added to improve the anti-knock number. However the use of lead compounds are now banned due to pollution. Hence some other formulation is adopted.

You must be referring to the octane numbers of gasoline. They are about 87, 89, and 91 to 93. The higher the number the more expensive gas is. Most cars now use the lower number gas. Check your owners manual.
