Most UK banks charge at least £8 to cash an overseas cheque, the cheques I am getting are usually about $25 so this is not cost effective. What is the best way to handle these, is there a specialist current account that would help, or another cashing method?

As others already suggested, a money order would be easy. Your other option is purchasing a prepaid Visa/MasterCard. You buy the card at a bank (some stores sell them in the US). The card is like a gift card - the value is only what you pay for it. But, since it's not for a specific store, you can use it anywhere that Visa or MasterCard is accepted. Wow, I sounded like a commercial there...

Try the Post Office they cover most things these days and I bet they are cheaper too.
