I have a brand new car that I REALLY want to make sure isn't damaged. However, my garage isn't very wide, so it's very easy to bump up against the walls on either side when entering or leavign and get paint and scratches on the car. I already have one scratch on the side. :-(

Other than stopping use of the garage, what are my options? I've thought about taping thin polysterene packing material (the kind that comes in TV and computer boxes) on the walls of the garage. Any other ideas? Whatever I do shouldn't take up a _lot_ of space because then my car wouldn't be able to get in. :-)

I don't own the place, so whatever I do has to be removable too.

What about indoor/outdoor carpeting? You can tack it up on the walls and will be able to take it down. Home Depot has it pretty cheap. Also, there is a product that you put on the floor of a playroom to cushion kids while playing. It is thin foam and is shaped like puzzle pieces and you just fit them together and tack to the wall. Good luck!

I would suggest that you use "Pool Noodles"
The noodles have holes throuhd the middle so they could be laced on some light weight rope/clothes line material and hung horizontally along the garage walls. The nice thing abut these is that the bright colors will serve as a reference to where they are as they will be easy to see. The soft foam material makes them ideal for this application.

These will be easily removable when you have to move too!

There is a paint that contains rubber , mainly used for tools. It comes in different colors too. A coat of that may solve the problem. Anything else is going to narrow your opening even more. Another alternative would be to cover it with a vinyl material like vinyl siding-that would be removable.

Go to the auto parts store, I forget what they're called, but, there is a rubber or plastic device that is about 4 inches long and 1 inch wide that installs on the car door made just for this situation. No tools required to install, just glides on. Probably a dollar or two to buy.The customer service rep should be able to help you.

How about hanging a tennis ball from the ceiling so that it lines up with your hood ornament or barely touches the side of the car when you are pulling in straight? Seems like it is better to prevent the scrape than soften it.

Dumba**, glue cheap indoor/outdoor carpeting runner to the walls neatly top edge should be bound with a small binding strip so it doesn't curl and stays neat. The runner is about a $1 a foot.

Cut old blankets into strips and staple or tack them on the wall at car height.
Or, try vaseline. Some things just aren't meant to be.

You can attach some old carpet to the wall. My father in law has had his up both sides for years now.
