I don't think that there is anything out there that actually shows how popularity affects ambition. I agree with what has already been said (some less popular people would have more ambition than more popular people).
I have to say that there are times where a person is popular because of their ambition. I was like that in college as well as a couple of my friends. Of course, none of us were considered 'popular' in high school and none of us cared about being 'popular.'
Going back to what I saying in the beginning, I'm sure that there are a lot of popular people that have a lot of ambition and a lof of unpopular people that lack ambition.

I don't think there's any scientific correlation, but I have a lot of friends who were unpopular when they were younger so they spent their time working hard to become better at school so they could "best" the kids who were more popular. I guess from that example, the correlation between popularity and amibition would be that sometimes, the less socially popular you are, the more likely you are to throw yourself into your studies and have higher academic ambitions.
