Yes it was real. Brett told Vince that the Canadian audience wouldn't be able to handle it if he lost on Canadian soil, and that they would probably riot (even though it wasn't even in Calgary which is Brett's hometown). He said that he'd step down as champion the next night on Raw, and then go over to WCW with whom he'd just signed a contract. But Vince, Shawn and HHH didn't want to risk Brett doing to the WWF world title what Madussa did with the WWF womens title, and show up on WCW Nitro and throw it in a garbage can.

Read the wiki for details...but it's true...Bret had signed with WCW, and Vince didn't want him to walk away with the belt...Bret had offered to drop it the next night, as long as he didn't have to lose in his home town...but Vince screwed him...HBK just started putting on the sharpshooter, the ref immediately counted out Bret...if you can possibly get hold of it, there's a fantastic documentary about the whole thing...it's called "Wrestling with Shadows"...it's possibly the most legendary real screwjob in the history of the business...and it is very, very real...

Yeah.. It was actually real, thats why it is called the Montreal Screwjob. Bret Hart is recovering from a bicycle accident which occured a few years ago. He is at the moment with his wife living his life in Italy and he is not thinking about returning to wrestling, or even the WWE.
