I live in Midland and my fiance is in Canton...can definitely understand how boring your drive is.

The easiest way back would be 127 down to 96 or 94 (Lansing). Take either one east. But this time of year you're also dealing with a lot of road construction. If you want to bypass most of it, you can cut across a little farther north on M-21 and take that over through Owosso. It's actually a really pretty drive, especially in the fall. Then you can either pick up 52, 75 or 23 in the Flint area.

I've tried taking 127 all the way down to 94/96, but you hit that wretched speed trap south of Alma where it's a strictly enforced 55mph. They love people like you from out of the county who they can give the ticket to knowing the odds are you won't take a whole day off work to trot over to contest it. The DO ticket at 59 mph. I'm not a fan of that route at all. There are usually 8-10 local, county and State police cars in each direction waiting to hit you for speeding and anything else they can find (especially seat belts). This is one time that reading a map doesn't tell you the whole story.

There's no shortcut up through the center of the state, and not even through the Thumb. Even though it's a mess for now around Saginaw, you can bypass that by taking 675 or M-46. M-46 will take you over to Alma and bypass the speed zone I just mentioned. It's also a 4 lane highway and makes a lot of sense once you're through Saginaw.
