And what can I do to ease the discomfort? Besides painkillers which have never helped in the past. As they just make me really sleepy.

I am by no means a doctor but I have dislocated a shoulder before. If there is no damage that requires surgery then you are probably looking at 4-6 weeks. Strengthening exercises (I.E. lifting a book with your arm straight directly in front of you, then laterally) can help the healing process.

For the 2nd question, the discomfort probably comes from inflammation or swelling. Taking something like ibuprofen will ease the swelling which in turn will ease the discomfort. Also try icing the area once or twice a day.

Hope that helps

You may very well be able to take an across the counter pain killer rather that a "drowsy inducing" Prescription and get just a much relief.

For a broken ankle and for my Rheumatoid Arthritis I use Max strength Excedrin instead of my prescriptions. This way I stay alert instead of sleepy.

I think it takes a while for a shoulder to recover.

My Husband damaged the tendon to his wrist when he banged a door knob. It took 18 months to recover and 8 years later he still is protective of it.

Best Wishes on your recovery.
