i just got hired by a small privately owned printing business. what's the next step? do i get a weekly check or do i get paid in cash? do i need to provide ssn card, ssn number, birth certificate, photo ID, H.S. diploma, transcript. do i have more paperwork to complete? will my employment record be kept in the social security administration database?
can someone please fill me in on the next administrative process? i don't want to look stupid in front of the boss and just be prepared for whatever he asks me to provide.

I'm a high school career counselor and I'm guessing you filled out an application before they hired you. The application would've contained most of the information you just mentioned (i.e., SSN, history of education, etc.). A birth certificate should not be necessary if you have a Social Security Card and your H.S. transcript won't be necessary unless there's information on the transcript germane to the position you've been hired to do. However, a copy of a valid photo ID may be required so they can attach the photo to your application. And regarding your employment record the employer should keep an employee file on you in their personnel files. And the SSA will keep minimal information on your employment record as provided by your employer.
Regarding your pay check you'll probably get paid by check rather then cash unless your employer finds it more convenient to pay you in cash. As to the frequency of pay your employer can pay you weekly, bi-monthly or monthly ... whatever they choose. I'm guessing, because it's a small company, you may get paid once a week (by check).
And please know that the questions you've asked the employer (as part of the hiring process) is obligated to let you know especially your frequency of pay and any other information they deem appropriate prior to you start date. There may be a probation period (perhaps 90 days) that they will impose. This probation period gives the employer time to observe your work habits (i.e, productivity) and social skills and to decide whether you are well suited for the position.
You may also sign an "At Will" termination form which allows the employer to terminate you at their discretion, prior to the 90 days, or any day thereafter. This form allows the employer to legally terminate any employee who develops work habits contrary to company policy such as being consistently late or unproductive.
I hope this information helps ...

If you would prefer both equally, just accept the first offer you receive (if you receive an offer) and call the other place and thank them for their time and tell them that you are no longer a candidate for the position. The more tricky situation is if you really would prefer one over the other...but the one you prefer less calls you first with an offer. The best you can do there is ask for 24 hours (maybe 48 hours) to make a final decision and then hope that the other place will make a decision within that time frame...although, honestly, I don't know how well that tactic works on part-time minimum wage jobs. You generally won't get a choice of when you work. Juggling both jobs would work only if one needed you during days and the other needed you at nights, or something like that...and that's not likely to happen.

I'm sure they will go over all the details with you when you start. Bring 2 forms of ID, your driver's license and your SSN card. You must have your SSN card if they are going to have the federal and state taxes taken from your check. Most likely you will receive a check. If you do not fill out W-2 forms, then you may get cash or a personal check that does not take taxes out. If that is the case, legally you would be considered a "1099" worker and you would need to claim your income on a W-1099 form at tax time.
If you haven't filled out paperwork yet, then that would be the next step. Tax forms, such as the ones above, statements of confidentality or other forms, such as understanding the safety procedures of the company are all usually included in the next step. They will also tell you about how to use a timeclock, if you're hourly and when you will get paid. Don't be afraid to ask questions when there is something you don't know or don't understand.
If you fill out the federal and state forms, the Social Security Administration will have a record of your employment there.

It sounds like you are in the US but I can try and help by telling you about what similarities there are in the UK.
You will need to provide a national insurance number (similar to your SSN)
References should provide proof of your qualifications (from your college or UNI) if not, have them to hand, or bring them in the next day.
Your employment record IS held in the UK but I don't know what the US situation is.
It's normal to be paid by BGC (Bank Giro Credit) in most countries unless you negotiate cash payment with your new boss. A BGC means that you will have to provide bank account details to the company that you will be working for. Additionally if working on a weekly wage, you normally work one week in arrears and paid on a Thursday (so if you start on Wednesday, say, you will be paid One week on Thursday for one week and one days work. If you are paid monthly and you start on the fifteenth of the month you will be paid on the last working day of the month. Even if you work Saturdays and the last working, i.e. banking, day of the month is a Friday you will be paid on a Friday).
Most companies have a HR (human resources) process in place which will have pre-printed forms which makes the process very easy.
Finally, good luck with the job!
Tabman.
