well...dont give 5$, give 1 $ to someone in need and do it when there are no other beggers around. Or better yet donate some money to a soup kitchen or salvation army once or twice a year.
They do a better job of providing food or clothes or whatever to the needy and you dont have to feel bad about helping just one begger and leaving out the rest.

I certainly understand their wanting to get their's too, but what irks me is when I give to the begger and the begger criticizes me for not giving more or differently. I took up one of those "will work for food" offers a few times. They usually weren't worth much in the way of work, and when I walked them through the grocery store showing how to get the most for the money with fruit and vegetables, and bread, they almost always sneered, "Just give me the money." When I buy a bag of groceries and find most of it abandoned later, that is what I consider to be worse.

Yes, I have, our vacation to Vancouver, BC was ruined by panhandlers, they were everywhere and very belligerent! I believe in the golden rule but, really, there has to be a limit! Anymore I make my donations to our local homeless shelter and give out cards with their toll free number on it.
I believe we should do all we can to help the less fortunate, but some of these folks aren't homeless, they're just scammers, they pull in 100 to 200 dollars a day.

You should donate money to charities because the people out there might be pretending to be poor. They may have old clothes and instead of throwimng them out, they act. You may never know.
