That's a great question that many people with an interest in evolution, sex, and philosophy are trying to answer.
From what I've read and what I've thought, I would have to say that nipples are merely an erogenous zone or a very sensitive spot (IE: my boyfriend's most ticklish spot it his nipples =p). "Nipples" are also created within the womb before reproductive organs are. It's a very distinctive trait that only mammals have for the most part.
