look at it this way - if you carry a knife, you'd better know how to use it and hold on to it.. because if you pull it on someone in "self defence" it can very easily be wrested away from you and used against YOU...

at least with pepper spray, if they take it from you - they can't kill you with it.. plus can be used at a distance - a knife requires close proximity combat - and judging from your profile pic - no offence - but you don't have the phisique for hand to hand combat.

I'm a guy - I don't carry a weapon - but I know how to fight. You should too.. take a self-defence course .. the best offence is a good defence and your greatest weapon is your brain!

good luck!

I am a man. I carry multiple weapons for self defense. Most of them are not legal and I do not advise carrying them at all.

I carry a Spyderco Spyderfly Balisong (butterfly) knife. It is my primary self defense weapon. This is illegal almost everywhere.

Second I carry a gravity lock folder. It has a simple one sided 3 inch blade. Gravity lock means that in the last half inch of the blade closed position the blade is sucked into the grip. This however is easy to open with one hand. In some states this is a legal blade. However in california it is not.

The last blade I carry is a simple long handled dagger. Formally known as a boot knife. this is a concealed weapon and is a felony in some states.

The last weapon I carry is brass knuckles. These offer devistating force and make an excellent first time weapon. these are illegal almost everywhere. In some places they will get you prison time.

Understand your best tool in a fight is your feet. I will run away from any and all fights in which I have the capacity. think about improvised weapons. Preferably ranged. Rocks, your belt, a stick or long branch. these do not take much know how to weild. Unlike knives you can stay away from your attacker. furthermore if you are not knowing about knife fighting you are likely to be murdered by your own weapon.

I do not condone the use of knives as self defense weapons. Knives are primarily first strike weapons and should be treated as such. I fully agree with all of the knife laws and intend to take my punishment without question should I be caught.

Hails to the truth,
Silence

I carry a pocket knife in my purse but not for self defense - it's just a handy tool to have. And I think I'd sooner use pepper spray on someone than a pocket knife. You'd have to get pretty close to be able to do much damage with a small knife and what girl really wants to carry around a sword sized knife all the time? (My brother carries a pocket knife the largest legal size all the time. He's used it to kill a snake but mostly it's a handy tool.)
I'd say my most lethal weapon of self defense is my high heeled shoes! LOL They can be wicked!

You can carry what you want but here in the UK we cannot carry such weappns.

It is for this reason why we do not have the alarmingly high levels of death that USA has and this is a good thing.

You put to death innocent people and let each other be killed with weapons.

Self defence starts with having selfless viewpoints - until you remove the weapons, you shall continue to die horrible deaths, more so than any other country.

I don't believe people should arm themselves. It can make petty conflicts escalate quickly into fatal incidents.

And for those of you carrying knives, do you have ANY idea what it's like to be struck by one of those things. Imagine you get drunk/angry with someone and where you would normaly turn your cheek you end up slashing their face.

I know a story of a guy from my town. He was getting a taxi and some other guy took it instead of him. The gu retaliated, dragging the other guy out of his taxi, but the taxi-theif slaps him across the face.

There was a razorblade in his hand.

It cut the guy right to the bone. His face was ruined.

Now first off, if the guy who was slapped was armed, it wouldn't have made a damn of difference in the situation, and if he did strike back with another weapon, it would only have caused more injury for both parties.

So no, i do not carry a weapon for "self-defence" (I belive it would act in quite the opposite way).

I'm male. Although I have an extensive collection of -decorative- swords at my home.

Phil G is wrong.
UK has had and isane rise in gun violence - ironically since they disarmed the populace.

Home invasions are worse than here in the US where criminals know better or get shot.

Also, bands of hooligans basically stomp on you if you look at them wrong in certain parts of London, Liverpool etc. Not to mention pickpocketing, purse snatching etc.

There is one thing that prevents crime and one thing only - Locking up perps and throwing the key away since almost all felony arrests are of perps with previous felony arrests - do the math.

JUST me shut the $#^$ up! at the age of 18 you can own a long gun and at the age of 21 you can own a handgun you DONT need a permit to carry just to own a gun you just need that permit to carry a concealed handgun in most states. anways. a knife would be ok but honestly would it help you any? pepper spray would be your best bet because u can blind the maniac and run away and get help. a knife i think will just make things worse (unless your trained in knife skills and hand to hand combat) and an airhorn will just anoy the hell out of an attacker lol

I do, its called my brain. It is usually best used in conjunction with that other self defense weapon, my mouth.

I do, my hands, fingernails, elbows, knees and feet usually work if u know how to use them in defensive situations. You don't always need an inanimate object to protect urself.
