the best way to get the whole carpet clean is to rent a steamer and use tide with bleach instead of what comes with it....its like putting your whole carpet in the washing machine!
most grocery stores rent steamers for about 20 dollars for 24 hours

your laundry detergent will do just as good , I use 1/2 cup to 6 cups of hotwater per floor. It gets it soft & smelling really nice.
