The base closings were actually more of the DoD's ideas in order to make the military more efficient and cut the duplication. But the opposition to base closings is always political, because it is a huge loss of revenue to the affected area and the affected state.

There have been base closings going on for decades, and politicians fighting to prevent it.

Yes , you are right , but all any one wants to do is attract before they check out the facts . They can't defend their point so criticize and call names . It happens on either side of a question .
