It is probably a goldfinch. They are really beautiful, the male is usually bright yellow with black markings while the female is a duller yellow.

I live in N. Carolina, but the bird sounds very familiar. I have several wild bird feeders in my yard, which attract an array of birds of different species, but it sounds like the yellow finch. They are extremely bright colored, and are everywhere around here. I have also seen them in a dark blue color and a turquoise.

I am in NE Ohio and I have them too. They are goldfinches and they are so much fun. I have several goldfinch feeders (special thistle bags with seeds sold at HomeDepot) about 10 feet from my home office window. Like I said, they are fun, because sometimes they get playful and land on my window screen and "sing" to me while I work. Very intellegent birds for their size.

I agree with those who say it's a gold finch. I have them coming into my back yard and pilfering the Zinnia seed heads. :-)

However, the link below has good information to include pictures. See if this is what you saw.

It's a Goldfinch. They like thistle seeds, black oil sunflower seeds and evening primrose seeds. Take an old nylon stocking, fill it with seeds, and watch them. They will cling to the nylon and eat.
