Metallica. Besides don't fear the reaper, most people couldn't name a Blue Oyster Cult song. Metallica were pioneers of a genre, and deserve much more respect than BOC (although they are cool)

Up until the self titled "Black" album Metallica was my favorite American band, Alice Cooper and Slayer close behind. I always liked BOC too... Metallica wins for changing the course of metal but lose for selling out. BOC was always underrated.

BOC, definitely: the band made a huge career going "underground", sometimes surfacing up to throw us a mainstream rock hit, before submerging back into the dark lake for us to follow and track.
Besides, between the two examples: BOC were the first to welcome bootleggers who for free promoted their music and stage works---and BOC were very very in tune with their marketing strategies for the band as well.
And let's face it: BOC rocked; Metallica crunched.
