Ok....you got a lof of answers.
But.... what system are you using? Windows XP Home Edition? There is NO real security. You just push ESC and you can enter the system... or it's VERY easy to override or creset the password.
With Windows XP Pro, here you have some good security...but only Your Documents folder is protected. If you put your datas in a folder under the root directory, they may not be protected at all.
The best way is to setup a password in the BIOS of your computer, so it blocks the computer from starting if you don't enter the correct password. It's still possible to bypass it, but you need to open the computer and to know how to reset it...
Good luck

Go to start, control panel, users and set a password for the user that logs on. This will mean that a password will have to be entered to access the desktop and if you set your screensaver to come on then a password must also be entered to switch it off.

Right click anywhere on the desktop and select Properties
Go to screen saver and select one and a time. There's a checkbox that says lock machine with screen saver...
Also, if you just want to lock the desktop when you're away, then press ctrl alt del at the same time and choose lock computer.
