Were charcoal pencils still used after mass manufactured ones came out?

Question

I'm trying to figure out if this can be used as a prop in a play set in 1897. Every time I do a search on charcoal pencils it brings up art supplies. I did see one in a museum school classroom but wasn't sure if someone would keep using one after the newer yellow ones came out around 1875.

I dont think they were used anymore after they came out with the new and approved ones....
