Check for any wearing at first glance see if you can see white metal, or silver, copper, bronze, or brass showing through.
I have this site in my favorites a wealth of information.

If you cant see a carat stamp
different carat (9ct .375) , (10ct .416), (14ct .585), (18ct .750), by them selves then it is solid gold
But if you see say 9ct gold filled it has a coating of 9ct gold over maybe brass ,silver or another metal
It could be gold plated or Rolled gold
if you see gold filled with a carat stamp it is not solid gold
Check the link it explains this well also has silver cases and descriptions happy collecting

Sell it on Ebay for $10. If the person is really excited when they get it, it was real.
