Take it to a jewler's shop, they should be able to tell you.

Check for any wearing at first glance see if you can see white metal, or silver, copper, bronze, or brass showing through.

If you cant see a carat stamp
different carat (9ct .375) , (10ct .416), (14ct .585), (18ct .750), by them selves then it is solid gold

But if you see say 9ct gold filled it has a coating of 9ct gold over maybe brass ,silver or another metal

It could be gold plated or Rolled gold
if you see gold filled with a carat stamp it is not solid gold

Sell it on Ebay for $10. If the person is really excited when they get it, it was real.

Real gold is very soft. you should be able to scratch it with your finger nail.

There will be a marking somewhere on it or inside that says 14K or 10K or 18K or whatever.
