A lot of computer programmers notice the advantages of other operating systems [OS] like Linux and Mac (for multimedia), but what would it take for the general public to switch over to one of these OSs?
1. Better tech support?
2. Better/More Games?
3. Easier to use?
4. Make it look like Windows so I won't know the difference?

I got a lot of good feed back on this and as a programmer I need to know what I need to do to make great software pwople will use. I'm finding that the problem isn't any one particular thing but education. Most people don't seem to realize what is out there. I think the key thing to selling a system would be an excelent marketing department (I guess that is why MS is doing so well).

The organisation I work for have a licensing agreement that allows its employees to have XP pro, Office 2003 on their home machines.
If the agreement didn't exist I would still buy XP pro but use Open Office.
I have tried various flavours of Linux, but its such hard work to set up and keep up to date. At least with windows there is a reasonably good chance of getting all the required updates, as well as hardware drivers from different manufactures.

Better / More games on the specific OS.
I'd like first to be sure that Windows docs and other stuff won't have trouble being run under the new OS.
I plan to move on Linux environment. But I'm not sure yet...

For me, take Linux or UNIX and add support for:
Major studio/popular games
Multimedia (both creating and playback) - already out there, but I find it hard to find
And you would see me jump off the Microsoft ship so fast I'd skip on the water like a stone!

There would have to be complete compatibility. People don't want hassle, and especially with computers, which go wrong so easily and are of such value to us all.
There would have to be a very easy switch, and a very obvious incentive to change, with limited complications.
A possibility in the future, but I don't think at the present.

price is a huge factor considering that macs are much more expensive than PCs.
It also has to be easy to install, maintain, and use.
As was mentioned above most people want to use the software that came with their computer and since most people purchase PCs because of the price they will use windows.

your average PC user uses the OS supplied with their PC.
People occasionally ask me for tech advice.
Ask them what OS they are using or even which browser they are using and you get a blank stare.
Get the OS out with the new PCs and they will use it.

Getting away from the comfort of what they already know. Change is really hard for businesses and people.
