The Velvet Underground- Gotta give 'em props for starting it all. Their sound is more mellow than most punk, but still awesome. White Light/White Heat is good...
The Sex Pistols- COMPLETE lack of musical talent, so if that's what you want, go elsewhere, but they have an incredible ability to piss people off, and they don't give a s*** what people say or think, which is a big part of punk. EMI and Anarchy in the UK basically sums up what they're about.
The Clash- Good music. Very political lyrics. Awesome. They have a lot of variation, so not every song sounds the same, which isn't true with a lot of modern "punk".
The Adicts- They've been around for a while, which is great, and are REALLY energetic. Too Young is an awesome song (especially since I can relate)- I suggest getting adicted if you aren't already (Get Adicted is another good one, by the way).
The Ramones- Another early punk band. They crack me up more than any of the others- I Wanna Sniff Some Glue? The KKK Took My Baby Away? What the hell were they smoking? Regardless, they're cool. Psycho Therapy is my alltime favorite song by them, although I Wanna Be Sedated is classic.
Generation X- Fronted by Billy Idol. A lot of people don't like them because they see them as the beginning of pop punk (and lets get this straight, I don't even acknowledge the existance of pop punk. There's pop, and there's punk- they're complete opposites). They're pretty good though. More melodic than a lot of punk. Good songs- Gimme Some Truth, Running With the Boss Sound and New Order are my favorites.
The Jam- Cool. I like 'em. Also more melodic than groups like The Sex Pistols. Oddly catchy tunes for punk (At least I think so...) Their song The Modern World is good.
The B-52s- Ok, ok. They aren't EXACTLY punk. But they're influenced by punk. And Dance this Mess Around is my all time favorite song sung by a female.
The Damned- I've actually only got a little of their stuff, but what I've got is good. I think I'm gonna go buy me a new CD.
The Bouncing Souls- Weird name... But they're alright. Same goes for them as goes for the Damned, but I like the Damned a little better.
The Cure- some people say they're the real beginning of emo, but I like them. Hot Hot Hot is an awesome song, and Boys Don't Cry is classic (and kinda sweet if you're overly romantic or PMSing).
Devo- Only a couple people really classify them as punk. But they're weird as hell, and tht makes me like them. Working In the Coal Mine is a good song, and Through Being Cool has a good message.
The Stooges- What can I say? Iggy is the king. Umm... besides Elvis, I mean. The king of punk. Check out I Wanna Be Your Dog, and of course, Search and Destroy.
The Modern Lovers- Interesting vocals. Especially in Pablo Picasso.
Sham 69 and X are also good... and a song to listen to is Kick It, by Peaches, but featuring Iggy Pop.
Ok... sorry for the very long answer... I didn't mean to review all the bands, but I had to give credit to one or two, and I figured what the hell? Might as well do 'em all.

Dead kennedy's, Sonic Youth, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones,
Black Flag, GG Allen misfits, the clash,
I like the old stuff and I do NOT consider Green Day to be Punk Rock and I think they too are old enough to know better than to classify themselves as punk...
New Punk would be like the Distillers... They are awesome!

Stick with the old school- Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Bad Religion, Fear, The Exploited, Angry Samoans, Buzzcocks, Misfits, The Vandals, The Decendents, The Adolesencts... hell I could be here for a while. Avoid wannabe pop "punk" crap such as Green Day, Blink 182, amd Fall Out Boy-- that corporate $hit sucks @$$!
