What is wrong with people today.. So many questions on Muslim mathematicians or hindu or Jewish phycisists.. Will it make you feel better if Isaac was Muslim or Einstein Indian? Just because some people are of Islam, having a great mathematician in their history or any other great name doesn't cancel the fact that they are still blind and believe in a world that will never exist!

"Religion without Sciense is blind" .. I bet if Einstein was let's say a Muslim, hell he wouldn't even claim what he claimed.. He'd say " Allah bents spacetime" " The Blessing of Allah is so strong it even bents spacetime" " A photon is just the Voice of Allah travelling faster than anything shedding light to the world"

Isn't this true!? lol

It is difficult to judge, as India has produced many great mathematicians who have developped extremely important mathematical systems which has benefited our modern Civilization in countless ways.So they can all be equally considered as #1.However we must also include the other great mathematicians of antiquities from vaious cultures as well.

Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan.

Then again, while he was great in solving problems, he wasn't particularly great in expaining how he solved things. (Math skills and communication skills don't necessarily coincide).

His proofs and explanations were the equal of Pierre LaPlace, the patron saint of Math teachers ("It's plainly clear to see that .....")

(Personally, since you've asked the Physics enthusiasts instead of Math enthusiasts, I'd take all of these answers with a grain of salt)

Really hard to pick. How can we judge between them?

Yet, I would say that in terms of natural ability and talent, it must be Srinivas Ramanujam. A personification of Genius. that great English number theorist,G.H.Hardy said of him "I have never met his equal."

In terms of accomplishments, Baskaracharya 2nd, though sadly he is under recognised. This man, among so many other things, formulated calculus 600 years before Newton !
