Probably because it is more socially acceptable to objectify women than it is men. Or maybe because women object less to female nudity than men do to male nudity - too many men would be too freaked out or homophobic to pay money for a movie with male nudity. It may just be an American thing. I was in Northern Ireland last year and I saw Jeff Goldbloom naked on regular cable tv. We may be more uptight here in the us of a.

Nope. It is a standard set by the movie industry, which applies the ratings themselves. At one time, there was a ratings board (and I think there still is, in Canada and some other countries), but for the most part, it is the industry that sets the rating and it varies from time to time. Male frontal nudity has almost always drawn a more restrictive rating that female frontal nudity. Language is the same way. If language is involved, three uses of the "f" word will draw an R, regardless of whatever else is (not) in the film. It has nothing to do with religion.

Some male nudity is in R-rated (and sometimes PG-13) movies. I think it really depends on the reason for the nudity (sexual vs. nonsexual). Plus, women have more regions that are considered "naughty." A man can be topless but a woman cannot. Without getting graphic, I think there's a big difference between female frontal nudity vs. male frontal nudity. If a man is standing naked before you, you can see *everything*. If a woman is standing naked before you, you just get a glimpse of the outer region.
I think ANY female nudity could be regarded as sexual because guys are more visually oriented and aroused by such things. I don't think many women are going to get turned on from seeing a guy's naked butt (or anything else) in a movie.

Example: Repeated showings of Terry Bradshaw's naked bum in "Failure to Launch" (rated PG-13). NO ONE is going to view that as hot or sexually stimulating. I am still having nightmares from that...

If you think about it, female nudity in movies usually consists of breast shots or butt shots. Full on genitalia is never displayed. They do show the same shots of male actors in R rated movies (bare chest, naked rear end)
There is a fair amount of double standard though when it comes to movies. Rarely do we see naked male rear ends. (possibly because the female form is considered "art" and the male rear end is just hairy. lol

We (buying public) are just as much as fault than anyone. If the movie producers felt it would make more money to have naked men in the movies then damn sure they would put them in it. Recently (last 5yrs) there has been a rise in more men naked on screen. Most targets for the movies are 18-25 yo males and that's who most producers are making rated R movies for.

i once read online:

The director had Colin Farrell do a frontal nude scene in his movie, but decided to cut the scene because his penis was so big that it was a distraction to the film as a whole.

I thought that was hilarious.

and also: ever see Sideways? That male nudity was not needed.

Because the womans sexual organs are on the inside of the vagina. They are all covered op-oven though a woman is naked you still can not see anything (especially if there is hair down there)-a male sexual organ is his penis-and that is why you do not see a penis in R rated films.

Plus they are UGLY and nobody really wants to see that.

Probably for a couple of reasons. This is still technically a male dominated society and men want to see women naked. Women also just look better than men naked.

I have wondered that myself. I guess its a double standard like many other things in life. You are gauranteed to see more women nude on a regular basis than men. I mean look at everyday things like TV, advertisments, subjects that are considered news worthy, etc. It's not equal at all. Honestly I find it kind of sickening.
