The Star Wars series actually measured up w/ each on comming "sequel" by both raising the bar on special effects and story line. Toy Story 2's formula of finding more cutesy scenes worked well for them. The first three Rocky sequels were great; after number three, the series began to "jump the shark", much like Superman 3 and 4. And don't get me started on RoboCop 3.....lol.
Movie sequels rarely measure up to the original film.

It really depends on what you consider a sequel. Is it just another film with the same characters (James Bond, Indiana Jones, Friday the 13th, Toy Story, comic films...) or is it a film that actually continues the story (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Godfather, Pirates of the Caribbean...)?
Personally, I feel that the following (in either case) fall into the categories of equal or better than the original:
*Empire Strikes Back
*Spider-Man 2
*X-2: X-Men United
*Superman II
*Batman Begins
many superhero sequels fall into this category because they don't have to spend the time on exposition
*Toy Story 2
*Silence of the Lambs (sequel to Manhunter before they remade it as Red Dragon)
*Lethal Weapon 2
I disagree with those who claim the Indiana Jones sequels were as good as Raiders (they did not survive the test of time all that well) and I really disagree with those who claim POTC 2 was in league with the original.
There are most likely others that I can't recall just now for both categories.

I don't think movies about a series of books should count as sequels. Some that have held up or been better then the originals are Godfather Part 2, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and Indiana Jones The Last Crusade.

The second and third movies in the original Star Wars Saga were really good, The second Godfather, Beverly Hills Cop II, The second and third movies in the Lord of the Rings cycle. There are more but hard to think or right now.

Godfather 2, Spiderman 2, Empire Strikes Back, From Russia With Love/Goldfinger/Thunderball (all better James Bond flicks than the first, Dr. No),X-Men 2...not consecutively, but I'd say Batman Forever and Batman Begins are as good as the first one...man, that's actually a lot of them, and I could come up with more...

lol. well...ok i know this is a animated-movie, but still..i thought Toy Story 2 was pretty good, i liked it even more than part 1. :)
Pirates of the Carribean 2 was really good, and oh and i think all the Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings movies did quite well too.
But i know what you mean, i´ve often notice that most sequels dont really live up to my expectations.
