No.
I make my own judgements on how well a person carries a conversation and how knowledgeable they are on the facts.
But that's just me.

My first impression is, this is my kind of person. I am from Ohio and when I was 12 year old, I moved to Albany, New York. All of the kids talked about my accent (which I wasn't even aware I had), as if this made me ignorant. But after watching the way they lived there lives, it was easy to see that I wasn't necessarily the ignorant one. Didn't take me long to head back to the country. Everyone just needs a reason to look down on others, making them feel better about their selves. I personally find a southern accent very inviting and worthy of conversation.

Many people do think that Southern accents make people sound ignorant.
I lived in Durham, NC for two years -- so have a different take on this. I've actually discovered that there are three types of accents that Southerners have. About a third of the people have standard American accents -- where you can't tell where they are from. I think TV is homogonizing American accents (I now live in Boston and see that the younger generation actually pronounce their "R"s now).
About a third of the people have what I call "Genteel Southern Accents." Jimmy Carter is a prime example of someone with this accent. To me, it actually sounds a lot like the speech used by affected gay men in places like San Francisco and NYC (both are cities where I have lived) and it took me a little while to get used to it being used by straight men. The accent is absolutely charming in women. People with this accent are not mistaken for being ignorant.
The third Southern accent is one I refer to as the "Redneck accent" -- you know -- Jeff Foxworthy type accents These are the people who are thought to be ignorant. Some of them are.

I think people persieve southern as lazy cause of the slang, and ignortant fits under the lazy catagory. I have noticed that at work people laugh at me when i let my accent "loose" but when i am talking with perfect english and no accent i am taken more seriously and professionally. it sad. go figure

there is a perception among some people that those with Southern accents are a little slow.
There is no legitimate basis for this, it's a stereotype. .
don't sweat it. . you can't fix everyone else's mistaken perceptions.

I think so- the term "rednecks" and "hicks" are used far too often to describe them.
It's almost as bad as saying that all women with large boobs are stupid !

I think a heavy twang does make people think the person is simple but sweet.
