I was just wondering because I've heard that they do it but I have never seen the water change colour and I have never heard of it happening to anyone.

It's an urban myth, but one that has kept the water cleaner for generations. :)

It is a myth. You have to be careful with the chemicals you put in a swimming pool already. You don't want to put something extra in there that will cause a chemical reaction on purpose. That being said if you hold your pee in too long it will be yellow in colour anyway and that will be noticeable.

No, not true, but it seems the myth has withstood the test of time. There is no chemical that can be added that will change color, the most common story is the chemical added that turns red when someone goes "wee" in the pool, but it is not true.

Experts on such matters say although a reliable dye could be produced, the trick would be getting it to react only to urine and not trigger in the presence of similar organic compounds likely present in swimming pools. It's not a compound anyone appears to be working on either, and with good reason — who'd want it?

Some pools do yes. In Reading we used to do practice dives (SCUBA) in the pool and found that when we took the same kit to dive at cold outdoor sites where it was necessary to pee in your wetsuit to stay warm, the lining would go bright red.

It is a myth. The only chemicals in a pool are bromide, chlorine, muratic acid and various algaecides.

No, its not true, However....

That smell of chlorine which prevails around swimming pools, that is actually the smell of chlorine reacting with wee.
No wee, no chlorine smell.

I've heard of this too but never actually seen it myself. Apparently the water will turn green or purple and then you're caught!
