Are you sure your friends or family are not going to give you a baby shower? Well anyway here ya go honey.

got to have a carseat. the hospital won't let you drive away without one.
lots of receiving blankets.
3 or 4 soft blankets made of cotton
even if you are going to nurse your baby, you need some bottles for water and things of that sort
a breast pump if you nurse is a must. Sometimes you have to leave them and you need to save the milk for that time.
sleepers for the littleone.
bassinette or some type of bed for the baby.
baby magic bath and lotion
johnsons baby powder.
baby hair brush
new born diapers. the hospital should have some of these to send home with you as well as a book of coupons.
I used the baby wipes a lot
bottle of alcohol for its navel cord
a carrier chair of some sort that you can take them places in or sit it on the cabinet while you are fixing a bottle and not hold them it has straps to hold them in so they won't fall out.
when they are new borns all the swings and mobiles and stuff are not really needed. they sleep and eat and that is about it for a couple of weeks. getting born is pretty hard work.

I have 3 ages 15 to 8. Have a baby shower, see what you get, then go from there. When they are first born you get a lot from the hospitals, diapers, formula, pacifiers, etc. Have to have a car seat. You need a crib, playpen or bassinet. Don't worry about a high chair since a baby can't sit up in one for a while. Swings or vibrating seats are nice. Yard sales are a great place to pick up things, especially infant things. Lots of LOVE and PATIENCE is the most important things.

if you need to start buying the little things then i would start on the diapers...i started buying a pack of diapers once a week when i found out i was pregnant and i didnt have to buy any diapers for a long time. i also bought hundreds of dollars in baby clothes and my daughter ended up being in the NICU for 5 months so i have a huge trash bag full of brand new baby clothes that she grew out of before she even came home.

hey!!! are you having a boy or a girl? i cant find anyone to give these clothes to. i dont know what state you are in but i also have a baby swing and a bunch of other stuff that is taking up room. email me and let me know if you're close or not. i live in orange county, california.

oh and the what to expect while expecting book is wonderful! they have checklists for everything in that book on what you will need before baby comes home and there after.

You are saying little stuff, so it sounds like you already have the most basics. A couple of things I saw that were missing in comments were the alcohol and cotton swabs needed for baby's umbilical cord. If its a boy and you get him circumcised, you need vaseline (the hospital will tell you). Also, for washing, use Dreft. And prewash everything for baby.
How about nail clippers, bulb syringe, thermometer? Bottle warmer (not necessary but easier temperature wise and quicker). Or the blocks to keep baby from rolling in the crib or bassinet. A baby bathtub is a nice thing to have if you don't already. Baby washclothes, which are smaller and softer on baby's skin. Lotion. Diaper rash cream. (A&D is a good brand aside from Desitin - little cleaner too).
A good thing to add to the carseat is one of those head cusions, keeps baby's head from rolling or leaning too far over.
Hopefully you have things for yourself as well. It all depends on if you are breastfeeding or expressing instead.
Good luck!

Make sure you have lots of onsies and don't buy the newborn sizes because they outgrow those so fast. I always bought the medium sizes. Make sure you have lots of bottles and lost of pampers- some in the newborn size and some in the size 1. Wipes, powder, baby lotion, a bulb syringe for their nose, burp cloths, bibs, diaper rash cream. Find out what type of formula your doctor recommends and buy a small can just as a backup even if you plan on breastfeeding. They go through lots of clothes from when they feed- spit up. Blankets to swaddle them in-they like that. Hope this helps, I probably forgot something along the way. Good luck.

well if you want to buy the smaller items now you should start with the basics like: Onesies, pacifiers, mittens, bottles, grooming set, baby lotion, thermometer, recieveing blankets, sleepers, socks, maybe gowns, little beanie hats, baby wash, wipes, bottles brush depending on which type of bottle you are going to use. I think that's it. I am due in April of 2007 so I am actually going to start doing the same so I will have everything by the time the baby comes.

I was the same way with my daughter. Of course make sure you have all the big things, car seat, crib, etc., but don't forget the little things. Make sure if you live in cold weather you have pajamas, blankets, enough bottles if using them, diapers, day clothes, towels, your baby bag (trust me you're going to need it), I found out that if you think you might need it just buy it because you never know, reasonable things though not like the most expensive crib or stroller. I mean the little things, like wash rags, practical things.

There are only a few things that I got that I really used. Here are a list of things.

crib, bassinet, stroller, carseat, bouncer(a must have), swing, baby bathtub, clothes, pacifers, bottles, diapers, wipes, blankets, formula(which they will put your baby on a certain formula in the hospital), high chair, bibs, diaper bag, bottle brush, socks, shoes, burp clothes, nail clippers

Hope that this helps.

Nasal aspirator aka snot sucker, onesies, regular infant clothes, 4oz. bottles until the baby gets a little bigger then upgrade to 8oz., diapers, wipes, rubbing alcohol and q-tips, blankets, pacifier if you plan to use them, bottle brush, baby wash, car seat, bouncy seat or play pen to lay them down in, crib, bibs, diaper rash cream, gas drops (the cheap ones work just as good), infant nail clippers, baby wash cloths, a few small bright toys (they can't do much when they are first born but bright colors get their attention best)
