They do not check to see if you bought them. As long as you can do the work (using books of friends or from the library if you need them) they don't care.

Sometimes professors will loan you their own books during the class if you have to follow along. I even had one who let a student use their own personal book each night. If you tell them you are having problems affording the required book they will usually give you more time to do an assignment or have a suggestion for you!

What do you mean by "do"?

If you tell your professor about your situation, they may be able to help you. When possible, they can put a book on reserve at the library, and you can use it there. Or they may be able to have someone photocopy the first chapter for you, until you can get your own copy.

If your professor can't help, sometimes your advisor can.

my college requires all professors to keep a copy of their instruction manuals (books / papers / experiments) to be kept in the reference section of the campus library ....

check to see if your school does the same

I spent one school year withouth two required books, but I managed to get them from the library or from friends. The important thing is that you do the homework they ask you for.

No, but they can fail you for not doing the work that you will need the book for.
