Male and female are bodily designations much like the other designations of American, Russian, white, black, fat, thin, rich, poor, Christian, Hindu, etc., etc. Some of our designations may change quite often and some will last the entire duration of the body. Giving substance and animation to the body is the spirit soul, the spiritual spark who is an eternal, divine entity. That is our real nature. We may be white one life and black the next, just as we may be poor one day and rich the next. Or we may be American this life and Indian the next. The body is constantly changing because that is the nature of the material energy. It is constantly in flux. But we never change our nature. We remain eternal spirit soul.

The Bhagavad-gita, especially the second chapter, gives a lot more info about this. You can check out an online edition here: http://www.krishna.com/e-books/ After reading this one you want a copy for yourself, let me know. I've got an extra.
