I'm 37 weeks pregnant and I'm at least 1 cm dilated. My doctor thinks I'm going to deliver early but I'm not having any contractions. Anyone else have a similar situation?

Maybe you didn't have any contractions until the day you delivered?

Just wondering what other people's experiences were.

I do know that I am progressing because at my appt before last I was only dilated a fingertip and at my last appt I was 1 cm. I'm hoping to have progressed even more by tomorrow's appt.

But thanks for everyone's advice.

First, 37 weeks is NOT early, it's term.

Second, many, MANY women walk around dilated to 1cm (or even 5cm) for weeks without actually starting active labor. Other women won't dilate at all until active labor begins.

There is such a wide variety of normal that it's impossible for even your doctor to know just how soon you will begin active labor.

Third, not all contractions are painful. I know of several women, myself included, who were in active labor, dilating rapidly, who never felt any pain at all, just a sense that their belly was getting harder and softer in turns.

Enjoy these last few weeks. Rest as much as you can and try to ignore the twinges. When labor really begins, YOU'LL KNOW. Trust me. : )

Dilating Without Contractions

1 cm is nothing. You could still go for another month before you give birth. I know that you are excited about you baby but don't get your hopes up for an early labor. It may only cause you undue stress and frustration.

Checking your cervix during pregnancy is so useless. I don't know why doctors demand to do it. It tells you NOTHING. You could be 1 cm and have you baby within three hours or you can be 5 cm and not have your baby for 4 weeks. And if any doctor tries to tell you when you will have your baby then slap them. Okay don't slap them but don't listen. They are just guessing. That is all it is. And as another poster said...every woman is different. So what may be a sign of labor to you (as far a dilation) might not mean anything to the next pregnant momma. And visa versa.

Hang in there. It will not be too much longer (wither it is tomorrow or in 4 weeks)

Oh...and if this is not your first baby then you may always have been 1 cm. After you have your first baby then you never fully close up.

Oh...most ladies dilate 1-3 cm without having a contraction. There is even a lucky few that get to 7-10 cm without feeling anything. Nature is funny that way.

I gave birth 2 weeks early and started dilating 3 weeks before that. Every week I would dilate 1 cm without any pain. Only once did I have bad contractions it was about a week before my water broke. My daughter was excited to come out I guess, she couldn't wait and thank God. She was 2 weeks early but she was 6 pounds 12 ounces and a little over 9 inches.

Can You Dilate Without Contractions

I was 4 cm dilated with my first child for about 3 weeks. It's just your body's way of preparing for what is about to happen. If your Dr. thinks you may deliver early however, you might just do that, I'm sure they know what they are talking about. Every woman's body is different and you wont feel painful contractions until labor has ensued.

You probably are having little contractions and just not feeling them. When I was 38 weeks I went to a doctors visit It turned out I was dilated to a 5 and hadn't felt a thing. Which was awesome because they just sent me to OB gave me an epidural and then broke my water. Two pain free hours later I had a beautiful new little girl.

1 cm at 37 wks isn't a whole lot. Have been at 1 cm from 32 wks and was still only at 2 cm when labor started. 6 hours after labor starts, baby is born, for me. Doesn't really mean anything. 1 to 10 is a long way to go for some.

Wish you a safe and easy birth!

Hi. 1cm isn't all that much, and it could still be weeks.

I went to my doctor at 34 weeks, and I was 3cm dilated.

She told me to relax till 37 weeks.

At 35 weeks, a different doctor checked and I was 3cm and 100% effaced. Again, he told me to relax, and that I would have a baby in less than a week.

36 weeks - still 3cm and 100% effaced, no baby.

37 weeks, I was sick of laying around, so I went grocery shopping. 1/2 hour after I got home, my water broke. No contractions at all until way later that night 5 or 6 hours after my water broke.

And the baby was healthy and normal 7lb, 6oz, 21 inches.
