I had a friend a long time ago that I wouldn't mind getting in touch with but I dont know where they are now. I cant call every number listed in the phone book, how can I narrow it down, what does it mean when someone says to "google them"?

It means going to www.google.com and typing their full name in the search bar, you may get a few hits. They may be registered at other sites. Try "googling" yourself first and see what comes up.

"google them" means try searching for them using the Internet. You can do this by going to any Web search engine, particularly www.google.com because it has the largest index/ database of websites in the Web.

As for narrowing your search, try including more information about them in your search, i.e. state or city.

And if you got their e-mail address, searching for them via Myspace or Friendster can be better.

Go to www.google.com, put their name in the search field and press enter.

It helps if they have an unusual or unique name.

You could try www.classmates.com too. Lots of people have found former classmates on there. You need to know the school and year he graduated. They also have info on military service and college if you know what branch of the service he was in or where he went to college. For both you need to know the years he was in military or college.

Type in their name to google search and see what shows up. You will be surprised. In fact try it with your own name and be really shocked how much info is out there on you.

Go to www.google.com, type their name in quotes; "John Johnson" and see what comes up. Maybe they have their email listed somewhere or participate in a newsgroup or their name appeared in a newspaper article or they have their own website. You never know.

I don't think your old enough to "google" yet. Wait a few years till your "google" develops. Then you'll be ready!
